Introduction

Electrical engineers can leverage their knowledge and their understanding of fundamental principles of electricity, electronics and computer science in order to capture, analyze, transform and transmit information and energy. This Master program provides our graduates with a mixture of general and specialized expertise, making them desirable candidates for a broad variety of positions in the electrical engineering industry in general and highly sought individuals in their domain of specialization. First destinations for past graduates include telecommunication, energy, microelectronics, defense, and health companies, amongst others, as well as PhD positions worldwide.

The Master’s program builds on the research activities carried out at the Montefiore Institute of the University of Liège and benefits from its research infrastructure and equipment. The Montefiore Institute hosts research groups working at the forefront of various fields of electrical engineering. Experts from various related companies and university spin-offs also contribute to the training as lecturers or by supervising master students.

Description of the master’s program

The two-year master’s program consists of 120 credits and can be decomposed in three main parts: foundations, specialization and integration (see sketch below).


Sketch  

The “foundations” part represents a quarter of the formation and is common to all students of the master. It is composed of 7 compulsory courses that set the basic skills of an electrical engineer. It includes courses on advanced programming; analysis, control and design of electronic systems, telecommunication systems and embedded systems; and principles of management.

The “specialization » part represents half of the formation. For their specialization, students will have to choose one orientation out of the following three:


  1.   Signal processing and control, with an emphasis on the theory and practice of intelligent systems for robotics, image processing, and medical applications, among others;   
  2.   Electronic systems and devices, with an emphasis on the analysis and design of microelectronic devices, microsystems, sensors and actuators, with applications in electronics, acoustics, biomedical engineering, etc.;
  3.   Electric power and energy systems, with an emphasis on the analysis, design, control, and optimization of electrical energy systems, including renewable energy sources and smart grids.

Each orientation is composed of a specific list of compulsory and optional courses that are particularly relevant for the specialization.

Finally, the students will have the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice through the realization of two original projects (“integration” part). The “major project in electronics” is a group project focused on the design of an electronic device that incorporate concepts from power electronics, embedded systems and control. It will promote students’ practical knowledge of project management methods and tools for the realization of a concrete product. The master’s thesis consists in a substantial individual project that the student will carry out under the supervision of a selected professor.

Students will also have the opportunity to complete an internship in a research laboratory or an external company. This internship can be either self-sufficient, in which case it will account for 10 credits, or combined with the master’s thesis, in which case it will account for 5 credits.
